Obituary for Rebecca Bryant

Reflections of Life
A Women of Distinction and Honor

Sister Rebecca Beatrice Smith Bryant was born March 14, 1914 in the "great state" of St. Hedwig, Texas to the late parentage of Mr. Henry and Essie Leola Smith. She was the third oldest of 11 siblings and helped to rear many of her brothers and sisters.

While growing up in St. Hedwig, Rebecca acknowledged her call of salvation at Hebron Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev. J.L. Sayles. She received her formal education in a one-room school house that laid the foundation for friendships that endured through- out her lifetime.

Rebecca spent most of her adult life living in Houston, Texas working as a housekeeper for the Galloway family, heirs to the Exxon fortune for over forty-years. Upon retiring at the age of 82 she moved to San Antonio and married the late Deacon William Cullen Bryant who proceeded her in death May 2007.

Rebecca leaves to cherish her memory her last living sister Florence Render, a special niece, adopted daughter and caretaker Evelyn Grace Hartfield (Otis); a special great-great grandniece Ericka Hartfield; sister in law, Johnnie Smith and many nieces and nephews in the Smith and Bryant families.

Her Historical Significance

We were all blessed with sister Rebecca Bryant! She will always be remembered for her impeccable style, generosity, quiet confidence and signature baked yams.

She readily shared many of her life experiences, as she befriended women of all ages. Sis. Bryant was particularly fond of her nieces and maintained special relationships with many of them.

Sis. Bryant enjoyed the finer things in life and quite often said "I want the best." We pray today (her special day) meets her expectations!
