Obituary for Alice Thomas

Alice Lucille Lara-Thomas, affectionately known as Lisa, was summoned to her heavenly home on February 9, 2017. Her devotion to her family and her firm belief in God supported her through her 81 years of life.

Alice was born to the late Joseph Eugene Lara and Lucille Scott Lara, in San Antonio, TX on September 9, 1935.

She began her education at St. Peter Clavier Academy where she attended kindergarten through her high high school graduation. She then went to attend Fisk University. She completed nursing school and obtained her LVN license. When Alice started her employment career, she followed in her mother's footsteps and joined the Bexar County Probate Clerk's Office as a Probate Clerk. Years later she was promoted to the position of Probate Clerks Office Supervisor. She maintained this position for more than 30 years and retired from the County.

Alice met the love of her life, Arthur (Bob) Thomas. After courting for several years; they joined in matrimony in 1987. Not only was he her husband, he was her very best friend. During their 23 years of marriage, they made it a point to vacation in Las Vegas every year. They became doting grandparents spoiling their grandbabies rotten despite the parent's objections. During their later years together she was his devoted caretaker in his time of illness. He was and remained her sunshine on a cloudy day.

Alice was an avid mystery buff and always had a book in tow. She was happiest when in the company of family members and friends. Whether it be; dining, shopping or just "hanging out at the house", she maintained a close relationship with her brother, niece, cousins, and all extended family members, In addition, she had a wide circle of friends, whom she treated as family.

Although she worked outside the home, Alice cherished her title as Mother. She reveled in her relationship with daughter, Kecia. She perfectly balanced, love, tenderness and affection, with discipline, structure and accountability. The solid foundation she created enabled her to become a successful productive adult. Alice never withheld her expressions of joy and always made sure Kecia knew, "I'm so proud of you". This same spirit of nurturing and love was extended to her niece, "adopted daughter"Trudy.

Alice Lara-Thomas was preceded in death by her parents; brother, (Joseph Manuel Lara); husband, Bob, and step-daughter, Audrey Hill and step-son, Willie Canady. She is survived by daughter, Kecia Lara, Columbia, SC; adopted daughter, Trulena McRinna, Harker Heights, TX; step-sons, Arthur L. Thomas, Kerrville, TX and Ronald Thomas, San Antonio, TX; stepdaughter, Theresa (Benny) Alexander, Gulfport, MS;six grandchildren, Ronnie Knight, Columbia, SC, Christina Atkinson, Columbia SC, Robert (Candice) Black, San Antonio, TX; Sumer Canady, Ervin Livingston, and James Hill of Gulfport, MS; two great-grandchildren; Bryson Black, San Antonio, TX and Jasmine Burnidine, Gulfport, MS; and a host of cousins and devoted friends.
